The quiet power of high-cash-value whole life.
A properly designed permanent policy is one of the most misunderstood assets in personal finance. Used well, it becomes the private capital reserve at the centre of a serious wealth plan.

Rethinking what a policy is for
Most Canadians meet whole life insurance through a product pitch: a death benefit, a monthly premium, a comparison to term. The conversation rarely gets to the part that matters to serious wealth-builders — the cash value.
A high-cash-value whole life policy is engineered to grow a large, guaranteed pool of capital inside the contract as quickly as the tax rules allow. That pool grows tax-advantaged, pays dividends every year, and is fully accessible through a policy loan without triggering a taxable event.
Why "borrow against, not from"
The distinction matters. When you take a policy loan, the insurer lends you money using your cash value as collateral. Your underlying cash value stays in the policy and continues to earn dividends as if the loan didn't exist. The borrowed capital, meanwhile, goes to work — on a rental property, a business opportunity, or simply a bridge between decisions.
Compared with liquidating an investment or drawing from a registered account, the tax friction is dramatically lower and the compounding never pauses.
Where this belongs in a plan
Infinite Banking is a tool, not a plan. It sits alongside your registered accounts, your real estate, and your corporate structures — not instead of them. Designed well, it becomes the layer of your balance sheet that is always liquid, always compounding, and always ready.
Designed poorly, it is just an expensive insurance policy. Structure is everything.
The design questions that matter
- What is the ratio of base premium to paid-up additions?
- Is the policy owned personally or corporately — and does that match your tax situation?
- How does the projected cash value schedule align with the years you'll actually need capital?
- What is the plan when interest rates, dividend scales, or your income change?
These are the conversations we have with Owliv Wealth clients before a single illustration gets printed.
